Illesheim Germany, the home of Stork Barracks. The home of many American units over the years. Notably the aviation unit I was assigned to when I was sent to Bosnia and found the good captain. The base is Stork Barracks as named by the Americans, but Illeshiem by the local people. Illesheim also being the name of town directly outside the base. During WWII it was an airfield among other things. The closest big town is Ansbach in one direction and the bigger Wurzburg in the other. After that is the larger town of Nurnburg. This was my second tour in Germany and both times were great. The family loved it there and so did I regardless of the high intensity op-tempo. Always found time for fun becasue it was everywhere. Viva La Hoffbrau! The post or barrack or kaserne as it tends to be called was an airfield during WWII and still serves in such a capacity of 1999. The unit I was assigned to was 2-6 Cavalry, part of the 11th Avaition Regiment. An Apache helicopter unit that saw alot of action in Desert Storm. Went to Bosnia, Kosovo, and of course Enduring Freedom. Exciting unit and serving with avaitors is a treat witihin itself. They are a different breed. A search on google.com once led you to the 11th Aviation Regiment's website. But upon my last curious look-see at 11avn.ill.army.mil saw that the sight was no longer functioning. Could have been server problems at that time, of course. I used the term "occupied" on the photo page to get a rise out of you. Did it work? |  END LOG  | |
